I was expecting the Greek Islands to be one of the
highlights of our trip and I will start by saying they have not disappointed us
so far!
We got up super early to catch a ferry from Athens to
Mykonos and I can’t say that was too enjoyable, we only purchased deck tickets
which meant we had to sit out in the sun for 4 hours – for most of which I was
almost falling asleep.
We had tried to book last minute accommodation and had a bit of luck but unfortunately we could only book 2 of our 3 nights in cheaper accommodation so decided to spent one night relaxing in a more upmarket apartment.
We were picked up from the port by the lovely owner who pointed out
many different sights in Mykonos as he drove us to his apartments, which were
tiny white stone houses. We only had the afternoon here so spent the day relaxing
on a beautiful (almost private) beach which was only shared with a handful of
other people staying in chalets around that area.
Above: our beach heaven for the afternoon and only sharing with a handful of other people!
We also managed to catch a pretty amazing sunset!
The next day we were off to Paradise beach in Mykonos for some more camping fun. We decided to head straight to Mykonos Town to check out the area while we could still be bothered.
It is a gorgeous little seaside
town, very traditional and filled with white stone houses with red or blue
windows and doors. All the streets are big grey cobble stones surrounded by
white cement; it was pretty much exactly out of a post card or Getaway episode.
All their churches are tiny white buildings with blue roofs
and white crosses on top – they are commonly featured in postcards because they
are so unique and cute!
We wandered around the town for a few house, checking out
the port, the windmills and an area called Little Venice – it is only a section
of houses that juts into the water similar to that of Venice but it was still
very pretty!
From here we headed back to Paradise Beach to suss out our
accommodation for the next few days. Paradise beach is mostly a campsite with
tiny little beach cabins that just have two beds and a table – very basic but
also very cheap! The cabins are literally 100m from the beach and the beach
itself is lined with bars, restaurants and take away food, as well as a huge
nightclub that can fit more than 3000 people!
We were lucky enough to be living in a group of cabins with
some pretty awesome Aussie, British and Kiwi neighbours, who we made friends
with over a few drinks and some fun games outside our cabins. That night the
huge club on Paradise Beach was hosting Bob Sinclair (pretty sure everyone knows
he’s a pretty famous DJ that had some big songs when I was in high school), us
and our new neighbor friends all had tickets to this event and decided to head
there together.
What a night!
After many drinks (don’t worry Mum I still remember everything
and don’t worry Karen so does Michael), lots of dancing, running to the
minimart to buy more drinks and lots of waiting Bob Sinclar finally made his
appearance at 4:30am – lucky we were all still having an amazing time, aside
from an unlucky member of our group that had to be tucked into bed.
Bob was a
bit of a letdown, he played a few old favourites and then disappeared into the
night! Still I was lucky enough to spend an amazing night dancing by the beach
and having a fantastic time with Michael and some awesome new buddies =)
My Mykonos neighbours: Hema, Amber, Emily and Maddi!
Bob Sinclair - the man of the hour!
After we had had enough of the club we headed down to
another bar by the beach, which was playing remixes of radio songs – we danced
here until the sun came up, I don’t really know how time passed so fast!
Here is a video I must have taken in the early hours of the morning - I was pretty excited to hear an Eminem remix and [if you look closely] so was Michael!
Michael and I having a dance as the sun rises (feat. Emily).
What better way to top off an amazing night then a very
early morning swim! Not long after the sun had risen we all jumped into the
refreshing paradise beach waters for a quick morning dip before decided we
could no longer keep our eyes open and shuffling home to our cabins to get a
few hours sleep.
The next day Michael and I were not faring so well. We spent
most of the day lying on the beach and taking dips in the ocean – not a bad way
to recover from a big night out though!
That night I think most of the campsite was in recovery
mode, there was much less happening and much less people out and about. I
joined our friendly neighbours in getting a few drinks, having a quick dance at
one of the beach bars and then settling in on the beach for some continued
drinking and some quiet drinking games. Meanwhile, Michael was in bed getting
the best night’s sleep of his life! We had a pretty quiet but fun night but at
3:30am I was ready for bed – can’t stay out until sunrise two nights in a row
it seems!
The next we day we caught a ferry to Santorini, where we
were ready for some relaxation and detoxing! There were hugs all around as we
said goodbye to our favourite camping neighbors and left for our ferry.
I had such an amazing time in Mykonos – it certainly lived
up to its reputation as the ‘party island’ of the Greek Islands and we were
lucky to make friends with some really awesome, fun ladies (and some Italian
boys) – I only hope everyone else had as good of a time as I did =)
